Stem cells are special cells of the human body that can develop into almost all other cells. The development into blood cells plays a particularly important role in medicine, as it offers the chance to cure serious diseases of the hematopoietic system such as leukemia. The probability of finding a suitable donor for a patient increases with the number of people registered with a stem cell donor center.
As part of Fit for Life Week 2025, our Year 12 students took part in a workshop organized by the German Stem Cell Donor Center (DSD) and received valuable information on the biological background and the donation process. Many of them then had themselves typed as donors at the DSD without obligation - thank you for that!
Social commitment is important to us and we are now proud to be one of the DSD's partner schools where regular stem cell donation events are held. Since the start of the school cooperation in 2016, more than 650 donors from partner schools have already been referred.
Dana Oehler - Project manager
Our school has been cooperating with the German Stem Cell Donor Center (DSD) gGmbH since (year). As one of over 100 partner schools of the DSD throughout Germany / (or) As a "Partner for Life", we regularly invite speakers from the DSD to give our pupils an understanding of leukemia and stem cell donation.
The DSD is one of the largest registries in Germany for the recruitment of volunteers who anonymously and free of charge give sick people the chance of a healthy life through their stem cell donation. Following its information events or workshops, the DSD offers our pupils aged 17 and over the opportunity to register as a stem cell donor with the DSD.
This cooperation gives our pupils an understanding of humanitarian values such as solidarity and aims to motivate them to make a personal social commitment.
