Young beekeepers compete successfully

The regional association of Saxon beekeepers e.V. has successfully invited to the beekeeper competition.

On April 1 and 2, I was in Köllitsch with Maria from IOM and our beekeeper Jörg Kötz for the Young Beekeepers Competition. When we arrived at the Lehr- und Versuchsgut Köllitsch on Saturday morning, we checked into our rooms and then received a guided tour of the 50-hectare site. After that, the first exams began: Herbalism, working on bees and more theory. Later we had a barbecue together and then went back to our rooms at the boarding school. On Sunday, tools and honey tasting were on the agenda. After lunch the award ceremony took place and afterwards we unfortunately already started our journey home, which took 1 hour and 50 minutes. Overall, it was a nice experience for beekeeper friends.

On 01 and 02 April 2023, the Saxon Young Beekeepers Competition of the State Association of Saxon Beekeepers e.V. took place. 35 highly motivated students from various beekeeping workshops in the state of Saxony met at the Lehr- und Versuchsgut Köllitsch to test their knowledge and skills and to determine the three best young beekeepers, who will then compete at the national competition in Rostock in May.

After arriving, the students first checked into their rooms and then introduced themselves to each of the beekeepers. Afterwards, the students had lunch and then went on a guided tour of the training and experimental farm and the training apiary/bee house. The children were amazed by the size of the grounds and especially by the large, heavy equipment, which aroused the enthusiasm of the boys in particular. The visit to the cattle stables with their calves was another highlight.

Then it was off to the races for the two young beekeepers Felix Serber IGM-Meerane and Maria Zimmermann IOM-Meerane with a 5-page theory test, followed by botany. The participants had to identify trees by their flowers and bark. After this station, it was on to the bees, for which a very gentle colony was specially selected. Almost all questions could be answered by the participants.

In the evening then a common grill took place and on the next day still practical handicraft (Rähmchen and Beutenbau) as well as tools and aids stood on the program, which found then with the honey sort identification its crowning conclusion.

The children started to get nervous during the evaluation and feverishly wondered which place they would have achieved. The award ceremony began and this time also the places 4-5 were awarded. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the two students of the International Gymnasium to reach the podium, but for the first time they are still very satisfied. Felix Serber reached place 19 of 35 with 50 points, Maria Zimmermann reached place 18 of 35 with 52 points.

The International Gymnasium is proud of the achievements and congratulates all participants on their successful performance at the Saxon Young Beekeepers Competition. We wish the three best young beekeepers much success at the national competition in Rostock!
