Our Europe Day

Every year on Europe Day (actually May 9), we commemorate the fact that we live in peace and unity in Europe. It is the day of the historic Schuman Declaration: On May 9, 1950, then-French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech in Paris in which he presented his vision of a new kind of political cooperation in Europe - a cooperation that made wars between European nations unimaginable.

And indeed, it has succeeded in creating a period of peace since the end of the Second World War in 1945, the like of which has never been seen before between the countries of Europe.

Never before have we been able to realize our life plans in such a self-determined way, never before has our life been possible to such an extent of dignity, freedom and equality. And to ensure that this remains the case, it is important for us as a school to draw attention to these achievements and to fill them with life in order to make clear how valuable they are, how valuable Europe is.
For example, after our ceremonial introduction in the auditorium, our fifth graders already dealt with environmental policy in the Escape Room. Class 6 researched a variety of European countries and presented some great results. All in English, of course. The seventh graders became film directors and made their own short films on a variety of European topics. For class eight we were able to win the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, which conducted a very interesting workshop with the topic "The EU and YOU". Our international students cooked typical European dishes. And grades nine to eleven experienced in the simulation game "Mittendrin im Landtag" how difficult it is to do politics, to make the right decisions for many, to participate democratically.

Ultimately, it was not only a day to commemorate, but above all to reflect. To think about one's own future by discussing with each other and finding creative solutions. By internalizing the principles of democracy in a self-determined way By developing the ability to respect the views of others, even if one does not approve of them.
This is how we imagine Europe.
