Excursion to Leipzig

On June 12, 2023, we had the opportunity to go on a field trip to Leipzig and explore the fascinating city with its rich history and culture. Our trip took us to some of the most famous and significant sights Leipzig has to offer.

First, we took the regional train from Altenburg to Leipzig.
Our first stop was the City Tunnel, an impressive underground railroad line that has enriched Leipzig with new perspectives. The idea for the tunnel was born as early as 1890, but it wasn't until 2003 that the ambitious project was realized. With a total length of 5.3 kilometers and four underground stations, the City Tunnel provides a faster and more convenient connection to the city center and shortens the route for commuters and visitors alike. The tunnel's history is marked by several interruptions due to wars and political changes, but ultimately it became a symbol of Leipzig's growth and modernization.

Our next stop was the historic Auerbachs Keller. This inn, which was first mentioned in the 16th century, plays an important role in Goethe's famous work "Faust". We could feel the charm and atmosphere of times gone by as we were guided through the rooms where Goethe himself once dined. It was an impressive experience that brought us closer to the connection between literature and history.

From Auerbachs Keller, we drove to Leipzig-Halle Airport, a major transportation hub in the region. The airport, which has been in operation since 1927, impressed us with its modern terminal and efficient handling of passenger and cargo traffic. We learned that Leipzig-Halle Airport not only offers national and international flight connections, but also plays an important role in the economy. Its strategic location and good connections make it an important site for companies and logistics centers.

After exploring the airport, we were looking forward to taking a break and having a bite to eat at "Zills-Tunnel". The unique atmosphere and historical ambience made the meal a special experience.
Nikolaikirche is the oldest church in Leipzig and played a significant role during the peaceful revolution in 1989, when the famous peace prayers that led to the opening of the borders took place here.

The last destination of our excursion was a visit to St. Thomas Church, which is closely associated with the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The composer's grave is also located here. Furthermore, the world-famous St. Thomas Choir, which looks back on a long tradition (since the year 1212), is active here.

Our excursion through Leipzig was a very good way to discover the diversity and history of the city. Hearing about modern transport links such as the City Tunnel and Leipzig-Halle Airport, which make Leipzig an important transport hub, was very interesting and enlightening. At the same time, we were also able to experience the city's historical roots, starting with Auerbachs Keller, which took us back in time, to the magnificent churches that tell a long and significant story.

The excursion offered us not only the opportunity to gain new knowledge, but also a deeper insight into the culture and charm of Leipzig. We could feel how the past and modernity harmoniously unite in this lively city.
