The school grounds at Meerane International Grammar School currently offer many opportunities for outdoor exercise and lessons, gardening, living in nature and enjoying edible plants. A number of corners of the large green school grounds are still unused and are to be developed in a student-friendly but sustainable, natural gardening way.
The main aim is to create a harmonious design for the whole site so that it can serve as a living and recreational space for pupils, teachers, animals and plants and provide a variety of sensory experiences. To this end, the pupils in the "Project Planning" working group collect ideas for the further design of the outdoor facilities and build scale models in preparation for implementation. By involving the pupils in brainstorming, project implementation and maintenance of the grounds, identification with and appreciation of their own school as well as teamwork and social interaction are encouraged. Natural knowledge and manual skills are taught.
The school is currently working on a reorientation of the teaching concept towards self-oriented learning for the pupils. In the further development of the outdoor area, the aim is to create a wider range of learning locations that pupils can choose themselves. However, the grounds can not only be used for learning, but also for recreation during breaks, for sporting activities and games, for sports lessons, as an outdoor dining room, for the beach volleyball, green school, cooking and baking and beekeeping clubs, as well as for school parties and musical performances.
